BUCHU ESSENTIAL OIL

Description

Buchu oil is extracted from Agothosma betulina (also known as Barosma betulina) of the Rutaceae family. The buchu can be the Agothosma betulina as only a betulina is now recognized in the BP as having medicinal value due to the diosphenol (camphor) components. It is also known as mountain buchu, bookoo, buku and bucco.

Common Names

Round leaf buchu, similar plant Agathosma crenulata (previously Barosma crenulata) is known as the oval leaf buchu.

Uses

Antiseptic, health tonic, helps in smoothly running of digestive system, helps in getting rid of insects.

Constituents

Buchu leaves contain diosmin and hesperidin. Buchu also contains pulegone, which is hepatotoxic.

• Buchu leaves are used to ward off insects and as an antiseptic.
• Made in an infusion (tea), Buchu leaves help with urinary tract infections, gout, rheumatism, digestive problems, coughs and colds.
• In vinegar-based lotion, Buchu oil can be used for bruises and sprains.
• Buchu leaves are also steeped in brandy to produce a “medicinal” brandy used for a variety of ailments.
